And yes, device management is essential once you have a fair number of devices - it streamlines IT work significantly, with benefits for users too. Personally, I like using Conditional Access to block non-compliant devices from accessing company data (USB blocked, secure boot on, disk encryption enabled, firewall and EDR in place, etc.).
A useful option is to allow personal profiles alongside company management - either BYOD with a work profile (company manages just a "work container" on the user's device) or COPE (Corporate-Owned, Personally Enabled) for company devices, often limited to certain roles. Either way, personal data stays in its own container, untouched even by a wipe.
I pay attention to best practices, and that usually leads to finding better ways of working - which is also a great way to upskill your team along the way.
